Gubbi Gubbi

Australian Indigenous artist

My name is Stevie Jean O’Chin and I am an Aboriginal artist of the Kabi Kabi (aka Gubbi Gubbi), Wakka Wakka and Koa tribe (aka Guwa) on my father’s side and Wadi Wadi, Wemba Wemba & Wandiwandian – (a subgroup of the Yuin Nation) on my mother’s side.

My paintings are inspired by my surroundings and stories told to me by my parents and family elders.

Always Was, Always Will Be

This painting represents the colours of the land on which our ancestors lived; past, present and future. To our people, this always was, always will be Aboriginal land. Acrylic on canvas 112 x 91cm

Strength

The river red gums have stood strong and proud along the Murray River at Swan Hill, the place of my birth. The roots of these trees were used to make boomerangs and other artefacts because of their strength. Acrylic on canvas 102 x 76.5cm

Paperbark Tree

Driving through parts of the Sunshine Coast, I saw many Paperbark swamps. Paperbark had many uses for my people, they were once used as shelters that kept the rain out, soft bedding that kept you warm and dry, and the oil that’s found in the leaves was used as antiseptic for medicinal purposes.
