My Journey as an Indigenous Artist

My art is a personal journey of creativity, storytelling and cultural connection. It is a way for me to express who I am, explore my identity and share my passion for the beauty and diversity of art.

I love exploring a range of artistic styles, from traditional and contemporary works to abstract art and portraiture. Each piece gives me the freedom to experiment with colours, textures and techniques, allowing my creativity to flow and my ideas to come to life.

My inspiration comes from culture, stories, experiences and nature that surrounds me. I believe every artwork has a story to tell, and each piece I create carries its own meaning, emotion and individuality.

For me, art is more than creating something beautiful. It is a way to express myself, celebrate my Indigenous identity and connect with others through colour, creativity and storytelling. Every artwork is a reflection of my journey, my passion and my stories.

Aboriginal Artist | Contemporary & Traditional Art
 
I am a proud Aboriginal artist with ancestral connections to the Kabi Kabi, Waka Waka and Koa peoples through my father’s side, and the Yuin Nation (Wandi Wandian), Wadi Wadi and Wemba Wemba peoples through my mother’s side.
 
My artistic journey is deeply rooted in my connection to Country, culture and the natural environment. Through my artwork, I express my identity, celebrate my heritage and honour the stories, knowledge and traditions passed down through generations.
 
My creative inspiration comes from the beauty of Country, the natural world and the invaluable teachings and experiences shared by my parents and family Elders. These connections continue to shape my artistic expression and influence the stories I share through my work.
 
Working across traditional, contemporary, abstract and portrait styles, I enjoy exploring different techniques and creative approaches, bringing together cultural influences and my own artistic interpretations.
 
For me, art is more than creating something beautiful. It is a way of storytelling, preserving cultural connections, honouring those who came before me and sharing a part of who I am.
 
Every artwork tells a story — a connection to Country, culture, family and identity.
 

Abstract

Through my childhood and teenage years, I constantly overthought questions and felt that I had to think, talk and behave like everyone else. I’ve come to realise we all think and learn differently and are all unique in our own ways. Learning should never be discouraged, especially when expressing ourselves. The patterns symbolise my brain learning in a different way and not conforming to society’s mindset.
It’s such a shame and tragedy that this part of my tribe and other tribes’ rich histories were frowned upon, resulting in our ancestors being forced to conform to only speak English. I feel greatly saddened to not be able to speak my languages fluently as does thousands of others. I can only hope and look to the future that one day, my people will be able to speak their languages again.
Our history and the word resilience are often spoken about with great pride. I am one of many that feel this immense pride in my people’s history, survival, resilience and our cultural and spiritual identity; and celebrating NAIDOC Week amplifies all these feelings not only for me, but all Indigenous people. We reflect with great pride.
This painting depicts the turmoil our ancestors endured as a whole and in many cases, still enduring from past hurts, injustices and atrocities. The colourful swirls represents initiatives such as Reconciliation week and change. Although still in its infancy, much change still needs to happen and when we all work together to make change meaningful, it becomes beautiful.
This painting tells the story of our shared history. The dark around the outside representing all the negatives and injustices our people faced in the past; from colonisation, to the Stolen Generation and assimilation policies and so forth. Has the painting becomes brighter towards the centre, this signafies the advancement for the better of our peoples struggles, much of which our elders stood up and fought for. The centre signifies the enhancement and coming together for change of all peoples that call this land home.
This painting plays on the ruggedness of this land, depicting the harsh conditions and terrain of this beautiful country. Just like our rugged lands, we as First Nations People have weathered this rugged Journey over time and are gradually getting to a place were our voices are not only heard, but changes are in play.
